In the wake of Sakura-Con, Comicon and Mr. at SAAM, Seattle’s resident Japanese pop-art painter Yumiko Kayukawa will be a highlight for the May 14th Capitol Hill Art Walk. We’ll host an artist reception with book signing and Q&A open to the public from 5-9 pm.
Having taken a local hiatus while showing throughout the U.S. and internationally, Kayukawa is excited to show in the neighborhood she now calls home. “I love Capitol Hill Artwalk!” says Kayukawa. “Grace Gallery has given me a special way to share my work with my neighborhood and catch up with friends and fans.”

“Run to the Hills,” the show’s title, is not only a nod to the show’s location but also a wink at the Iron Maiden reference. Kayukawa’s fascination with rock & roll, Japanese and American pop culture, as well creatures big and small is reflected in the playful and at times transformative stories she creates in her wild kingdom.

Beautiful faces and exotic animals painted in flawlessly flat comic book style draw the viewer in to find tiny bugs, jewelry, tattoos and intricate Japanese motifs. Some pieces like “Scream,” challenge the viewer to reconcile the beauty and style of the work with the sorrow of the narrative. The show will include paintings, prints, toys, books and more.

Yumiko Kayukawa grew up in the small town of Naie in Hokkaido, Japan. In those pristine, natural surroundings, she found her love of animals and nature, which later became an important theme of her work. Kayukawa¹s debut as an artist was with a Manga feature when she was just 16. She later attended and graduated from Bisen Art School in Sapporo, Japan.
Kayukawa’s U.S. career was launched in Seattle nearly 15 years ago where she began selling out her shows. Her career has expanded throughout the U.S. and internationally. She has lived in Seattle, Washington since 2005.

Grace Gallery is a non-profit gallery that connects artists with a broader community. Yumiko Kayukawa’s artwork can also be viewed by appointment through June.
